Cross Stitch
Cross stitch brings new challenges to children who are now becoming more aware and conscious. For one full year the handwork curriculum focuses mainly on cross stitch. Cross stitch is a balance of form and freedom as the children learn to mirror their work, creating symmetry. The biggest challenge with cross stitch is the mirror work/symmetry that is required: what happens on one side of their work must also happen on the other. Symmetry is an important inner exercise in seeing the two sides of oneself. To do this handwork successfully, the child has to be aware of the placement of each stitch. After the 9 year change many children need a project that takes all year and a lot of will power to complete. Cross stitch work can help children to be more precise and inwardly awake while strengthening their individuality. Typically, our first project is a pencil case working in two-way symmetry, and if time allows a pin cushion working with four-way symmetry can be completed.
